It's session time again! This Friday, August 17th, is the Dudley's Celtic Music Session. It's a free (though it's nice to buy a book or a treat to support the wonderful hosts) opportunity to listen to some wonderful tunes. Starting at around 6, local musicians will play and sing and sometimes even dance. It's a wonderful time and we highly recommend it!
Altan is an Irish music band that plays everything from old songs to jigs and reels. We've even used a couple of their songs for Ceili Class. In an excellent display of taste, the Sisters Folk Festival is bringing them in as part of their Free Summer Concert Series. This Thursday (tomorrow) they will be playing in Fir Street Park starting at 6:30. Bring a blanket or a chair and enjoy! Hope to see you there. #meesesighting
Standing up for civil rights can be hard. But it doesn't always have to be. Sometimes, it's as simple as listening--to the music in this case. Tomorrow, March 5th, from 2 to 6pm, Dudley's Celtic Session and The Old Time Jam are partnering with the ACLU to hold a Sanctuary Session at Dudley's Bookshop and Cafe (135 NW Minnesota Ave).
Sanctuary Sessions are a coast-to-coast benefit for civil rights being run by traditional music groups across the country. So come enjoy some great music, and be part of a national movement to support civil rights along the way. Entry is free, and donations to the ACLU are encouraged. To quote the event description from Facebook, "This family-friendly performance features lively instrumental tunes on fiddle, flute, uilleann pipes and harp, along with thrilling Irish dancing from Samantha Harvey. In addition, evocative photographic images provide a backdrop to some of the rich historical traditions of Ireland. Take a memorable glimpse into the enchanting spirit of Christmas, as the finest traditional artists from Ireland, bring you on a fun-filled start to the holiday season of 2016."
Irish Christmas in America is taking place at the Sherwood Center for the Arts in Sherwood, Oregon tomorrow night at 7:30pm. It sounds like a lot of fun! There are definitely still tickets left--$25 each. Check it out if you get the chance and let us know how it is. I've never gotten to go, but I really want to! More info here and here. Get your tickets here. Celebrate Celtic culture through a day of fun at the Ceili of the Valley’s inaugural Samhain Celtic New Year Festival this Saturday from 10am to 4pm at Grant Community School (725 Market St NE, Salem, Oregon 97301)!

Visit the children’s area for printmaking, clay working, coloring, knot creation and more. The day’s festivities will conclude with an evening concert featuring Portland-based traditional Irish band Na Rosai from 7 to 9 p.m. at the VFW Hall (630 Hood St. NE, just a block from the Grant School campus). They also put on a series of 2nd Saturday Community Concerts. This year the kickoff act is The Gothard Sisters.
The Gothard Sisters, who are actually sisters, are a group of multi-instrumentalist Celtic-influenced folk musicians, songwriters, and performers from the Pacific Northwest. Their concert will be at Winona Grange #271 (8340 SW Seneca Street in Tualatin, OR) and it starts at 7:30. Tickets are available here. For more info check out the Facebook event or the Gothard Sisters website. Yay! Gaelic Storm is coming to Bend again! They're performing at 7:30pm at the Tower Theatre. Tickets are $32.50 or $42.50 depending on where you want to sit. (I know that's kind of spendy, but it is the Tower so what can you do? And Gaelic Storm is worth it. Like we've said before, their live show is a lot of fun [Mouse has been to see them what... six times or so?] and they're one of our favorites.)
Also, for those of you keeping track--the McKenzie Highland Games end at 5pm which is just enough time to get back and see Gaelic Storm. *hint hint nudge nudge* ;) Gaelic Storm is a really fun Celtic band whose music ranges from traditional Irish songs, to more folk-type music, to instrumental Celtic music. They put on an excellent live show and they're one of the Meese's favorite bands. We highly recommend going to see them if you like Irish music and can find the time. Luckily for us, they're playing three shows in Oregon this year. The second one will be in Portland at Revolution Hall. You can get tickets here.
