Celebrate Celtic culture through a day of fun at the Ceili of the Valley’s inaugural Samhain Celtic New Year Festival this Saturday from 10am to 4pm at Grant Community School (725 Market St NE, Salem, Oregon 97301)!
Learn about the Celtic roots of Halloween. See demonstrations of art, cooking and dance. Take part in a workshop for fiddle, whistle, uilleann pipes or bodhrán. Listen to Celtic music and stories of the wee folk and faeries. Find out about the Irish sport of hurling. Try some Celtic cooking including bubble and squeak soup and Welsh cakes. Visit the children’s area for printmaking, clay working, coloring, knot creation and more. The day’s festivities will conclude with an evening concert featuring Portland-based traditional Irish band Na Rosai from 7 to 9 p.m. at the VFW Hall (630 Hood St. NE, just a block from the Grant School campus). Admission to the Samhain Festival is $10 adult and $5 students. Free for children younger than 12. Concert admission is $15. There is a $5 discount on the concert with a Festival wristband. Tickets are available here. Check out the Facebook event or www.celticfestival.info for more information about the festival. Looking for something fun to do a little closer to home than the Portland ceili? You're in luck! The Celtic Music Session is also this Friday at Dudley's Bookshop and Cafe (135 NW Minnesota Ave, Bend, OR 97701). They'll start playing around 6:30 and go until around 9pm. If you have an instrument and want to join in, you're welcome to do so. There might even be a little dancing. So come enjoy a treat and a drink and some lovely tunes!
Portland Ceili Society is back for a new season with their yearly Costume Ceili!
As we've mentioned before, Portland Ceilis sometimes include a lot of set dances. So, while we encourage anyone who has the time and interest to go, we would recommend PCS ceilis to those who have taken at least one of our classes. They also have a new venue--St. Barnabas Episcopal Church at 2201 SW Vermont Street in Portland. Doors open at 7:30 and a mini lesson will start around 7:45. The dancing goes from 8-11pm. Live music will be provided by Mikey Beglan, Nancy Conescu, and Larry Nugent. Tickets are $12 for General Admission. 8 years and older, please. For more info, check out PCS's Facebook event or their website. This month's Salem ceili is special. It'll be Pan Celtic and include dances from several different Celtic Nations. It sounds like it'll be a lot of fun. If you're free on Friday, zip on over to Salem and check it out! You might even see some wild Meese there. ^_^
For more details check out the poster below, the Facebook event or Ceili of the Valley's website. Another thing you can try if you'll be in town this weekend is Contra dancing!
Contra is related to Irish ceili dancing and other types of country dancing. It's fun and should be pretty easy to jump into--especially if you've taken our class! It's their first dance of the new season and they have a new location. They'll be dancing from 7 to 9:30pm at Pine Forest Grange (63214 Boyd Acres Road in Bend, OR 97701). Live music will be provided by The Hat Band (how fun is that band name? :D). It's $8 per person. For more details please check out their Facebook event or their website. It's time for our local Scottish friends' ball and workshop! This Saturday (October 8th) in Sisters they'll be learning during the day and dancing the night away. It sounds like a lot of fun and we wish we could go. If you can, check it out and let us know how it goes! A word to the wise though-- a Scottish ball or ceilidh is not the same as an Irish ceili. Meese, if you don't have experience doing Scottish dance just know that you may be spectating at the ball. The workshop, as far as I know, is open to everyone though. :) And if you're interested in being able to go to the ball and dance next year, don't forget to take the Scottish class every Monday from 7 to 9pm at the Sons of Norway. ^_^ For more details about the Workshop and Ball this Saturday, please check out the Scottish Country Dance of Bend and Central Oregon's Facebook event. S and A Irish Entertainment doesn't just do ceilis and dance classes. They also put on a series of 2nd Saturday Community Concerts. This year the kickoff act is The Gothard Sisters.
The Gothard Sisters, who are actually sisters, are a group of multi-instrumentalist Celtic-influenced folk musicians, songwriters, and performers from the Pacific Northwest. Their concert will be at Winona Grange #271 (8340 SW Seneca Street in Tualatin, OR) and it starts at 7:30. Tickets are available here. For more info check out the Facebook event or the Gothard Sisters website. Yay! Ceili time! S and A Irish Entertainment are starting their 10th season of ceilis and concerts and what better way to kick off than with a ceili? There is usually a brief lesson starting around 7:30pm and then dancing to live music from 8 to 11pm. The ceili will be held at Winona Grange #271 (8340 SW Seneca St, Tualatin, OR 97062). It's $12 or $10 for students, Veterans and 65+. Griff and I are heading over so let us know if you'd like to coordinate rides. For more info, check out their Facebook event or S and A Irish Entertainment's website. Hope to see you there! |
