Celebrate Celtic culture through a day of fun at the Ceili of the Valley’s inaugural Samhain Celtic New Year Festival this Saturday from 10am to 4pm at Grant Community School (725 Market St NE, Salem, Oregon 97301)!
Learn about the Celtic roots of Halloween. See demonstrations of art, cooking and dance. Take part in a workshop for fiddle, whistle, uilleann pipes or bodhrán. Listen to Celtic music and stories of the wee folk and faeries. Find out about the Irish sport of hurling. Try some Celtic cooking including bubble and squeak soup and Welsh cakes. Visit the children’s area for printmaking, clay working, coloring, knot creation and more. The day’s festivities will conclude with an evening concert featuring Portland-based traditional Irish band Na Rosai from 7 to 9 p.m. at the VFW Hall (630 Hood St. NE, just a block from the Grant School campus). Admission to the Samhain Festival is $10 adult and $5 students. Free for children younger than 12. Concert admission is $15. There is a $5 discount on the concert with a Festival wristband. Tickets are available here. Check out the Facebook event or www.celticfestival.info for more information about the festival. It's time for our local Scottish friends' ball and workshop! This Saturday (October 8th) in Sisters they'll be learning during the day and dancing the night away. It sounds like a lot of fun and we wish we could go. If you can, check it out and let us know how it goes! A word to the wise though-- a Scottish ball or ceilidh is not the same as an Irish ceili. Meese, if you don't have experience doing Scottish dance just know that you may be spectating at the ball. The workshop, as far as I know, is open to everyone though. :) And if you're interested in being able to go to the ball and dance next year, don't forget to take the Scottish class every Monday from 7 to 9pm at the Sons of Norway. ^_^ For more details about the Workshop and Ball this Saturday, please check out the Scottish Country Dance of Bend and Central Oregon's Facebook event. S and A Irish Entertainment doesn't just do ceilis and dance classes. They also put on a series of 2nd Saturday Community Concerts. This year the kickoff act is The Gothard Sisters.
The Gothard Sisters, who are actually sisters, are a group of multi-instrumentalist Celtic-influenced folk musicians, songwriters, and performers from the Pacific Northwest. Their concert will be at Winona Grange #271 (8340 SW Seneca Street in Tualatin, OR) and it starts at 7:30. Tickets are available here. For more info check out the Facebook event or the Gothard Sisters website. Yay! Gaelic Storm is coming to Bend again! They're performing at 7:30pm at the Tower Theatre. Tickets are $32.50 or $42.50 depending on where you want to sit. (I know that's kind of spendy, but it is the Tower so what can you do? And Gaelic Storm is worth it. Like we've said before, their live show is a lot of fun [Mouse has been to see them what... six times or so?] and they're one of our favorites.)
Also, for those of you keeping track--the McKenzie Highland Games end at 5pm which is just enough time to get back and see Gaelic Storm. *hint hint nudge nudge* ;) Oh em geeeee guys we got invited to dance at the Highland Games in Springfield next weekend! *Moose does a little happy dance* I am so excited I can't even write a serious blog post. Most of y'all already know about this, since we've been running around asking all of our awesome dancers to come with us, but the Frolicking Meese are going to be performing, on a stage, in front of people, at the McKenzie Highland Games (at least we think there's a stage...). And not because we paid or begged for the opportunity. THEY asked US! Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! We'll be doing two performances each on Saturday (11am and 3pm) and Sunday (10:30am and 1pm). We will also have the pleasure of watching the Scottish Country Dance of Bend & Central Oregon High Desert's demo team! Go Suzie! Go Todd and Jennifer! I guess I'm just going to be a cheerleader today. Well, I certainly can't blame me. I'm excited, too. For anyone who isn't already going, it should be super fun. I've been informed that there will, in fact, be a caber toss. Yes, that's the thing where they throw a tree. There's also going to be a Scottish Ceilidh. Be aware, all you Irish dancers, that while they do use a lot of the same moves, Scottish dancers do not teach the dances beforehand. And they speak a different dance language, so translating will be a thing. Don't be scared off, but do know what you're getting in to :) Kilts ahoy! -Moose P.S. Check out the McKenzie Highland Games' website (linked above) for tickets and more info about all the cool stuff that's going on. ~Mouse Gaelic Storm is a really fun Celtic band whose music ranges from traditional Irish songs, to more folk-type music, to instrumental Celtic music. They put on an excellent live show and they're one of the Meese's favorite bands. We highly recommend going to see them if you like Irish music and can find the time. Luckily for us, they're playing three shows in Oregon this year. The second one will be in Portland at Revolution Hall. You can get tickets here.
