Céilis
A céili is a social gathering that usually involves music and dancing. Frolicking Meese partners with Blackthorn Academy of Irish Dance to hold occasional public céilis that anyone is welcome to attend.
Schedule
Currently, we are hosting two public dances per year:
We will have live music for the first time in October 2024!
- One in March near St. Patrick’s Day
- One in October near Halloween
We will have live music for the first time in October 2024!
What to Expect
There is a short lesson at the beginning of the evening, which will give you enough basic skills to have a good time. We teach and walk each dance, then do it to music. During the music, the "caller" will announce the next move just before it’s time to do it; this is so you don't have to memorize the dance.
Roughly halfway through the evening, we will take a break for tea and snacks. There may also be a short performance by Blackthorn Academy of Irish Dance performers. Dancing will resume after the break, so if you can stay, please do!
You don't have to bring a partner (though you can, if you want). It's expected that people will ask each other to dance. It is common to change partners for each dance. When dancing with a partner, one of you will be the Lead and the other will be the Follow. These are not gendered roles, they simply describe a position in the dance. We have people of all genders dancing in both roles.
Tickets are available at the door. General admission is $10 per person, $5 for students and $30 for families.

The Hall
Knights of Pythias Hall is located at 420 W 12th Avenue, in Eugene, OR 97401. We will be dancing in the west hall on the 2nd floor. We will also have the use of the tea room in the basement. All bathrooms are located on the 2nd floor.
The dance surface is a sprung wood dance floor. Please bring non-marking shoes that will not damage the wood floor. No spike heels, boots, or tap shoes, please. Water is available from the sinks in the basement and the 2nd floor bathrooms. We highly recommend bringing a water bottle and refilling it over the course of the dance. |
Accessibility
Knights of Pythias Hall has a powered lift chair for each of the two staircases. These are operated by sitting in the chair and pushing one of the steering paddles (located below the armrests) in the desired direction of travel. Pictures in the slideshow below.
There are no accessible toilets. Both restrooms are located on the second floor. Each restroom contains two stalls. None of the stalls have handrails, and none is large enough to accommodate a wheelchair.

Parking
There is a small parking lot at the Knights of Pythias building, but it fills up very quickly. Please carpool if possible.
Street parking is available, but the hall is on the edge of a neighborhood and our dances will take place when people are home for the evening. Please be respectful of the neighborhood residents when parking your vehicle. All other nearby parking lots are owned by businesses, and we do not have permission to use them.
